Origin of Kan Eang at Pier
Grilled Jack Fish is one of the first popular dishes in our restaurant. Kan Eang became famous for this dish as well. 50 years ago, before the restaurant became popular, Kan Eang was a small shop near the Chalong Pier catering food to the local villagers and those passing through Koh Lon. Fishermen sell their fish to the restaurant, which then the restaurant resells the grilled fish to customers.
Because of the freshness and grilling methods, Kan Eang’s grilled Jack Fish has become popular all around the Chalong area, attracting a growing number of Phuket residents to the shop. Over time, Kan Eang has created more original dishes and expanded the menu. Even after a long time, Kan Eang’s grilled jackfish is as delicious as in the early days, successfully withstanding the test of time.

What is Jack Fish?
Pla Mong or Jack Fish is an Andaman sea fish that has a firm texture and a naturally sweet taste. Being a sea fish, it is commonly found in the Southern Thai region. It can be prepared in various ways, including frying, grilling, roasting, steaming, or even enjoying fresh in the Japanese style. The fish’s head is particularly favored for making kaeng som (yellow curry). This fish also offers health benefits as it is rich in proteins and essential vitamins. To make our signature Grilled Jack Fish dish, we source the freshest of these fish from the local fishermen to give you the finest experience of eating grilled jack fish.

The Art of Preparing Grilled Jack Fish
“Grilled Jack Fish” is famous because of Kan Eang’s unique grilling methods. We gently BBQ it with coconut husk, adding a smoky flavor. Kan Eang’s grilling method makes this dish more delicious in both taste and aroma. Fresh Fish is grilled over coconut husk, 3 feet above the flame. Coconut Husk is fed as a fuel to fire in the oven. A unique method of using coconut husk while grilling gives the ingredients a fragrant smell and juicy meat, completely different from ordinary charcoal grilling.
It also provides the appropriate amount of heat so that the fish will slowly cook keeping a moist and juicy texture. It takes at least 30 minutes or longer depending on how busy the kitchen is. The flavor of the grilled fish is uniquely Phuket Islander flavor–the aroma of coconut husk and banana leaf combined. Kan Eang’s fish grilling techniques, utilizing coconut husk, remain outstanding and continue to be a unique highlight even to this day.

Taste like No Other
The fish has a natural sweetness and thick flesh. The aroma of the coconut stimulates appetite. You can eat it alone or pair it with steamed rice as you like. Grilled Jack Fish is served with our traditional homemade sauce which adds more flavor and depth to the taste.
It is a Phuket-style tangy sweet tamarind soy sauce. The sweet and sour taste of tamarind, chili, shallot, and sweet soy sauce is perfectly paired well with the jackfish. You can even squeeze lemon on top for an added sourness.
